1958 Topps #291 Don Landrum

About Don Landrum
Card #291, from the fourth series, is the rookie card of Don Landrum, an outfielder with the Philadelphia Phillies, and it captures only a brief big-league look. He debuted September 28, 1957, against Brooklyn, started in center field in both of his games that year and collected one hit in seven at-bats. Philadelphia had signed the left-handed hitter as an amateur free agent in 1954.
Donald Leroy Landrum was born February 16, 1936, in Santa Rosa, California, and attended Mount Diablo High School in Concord. A left-handed hitter who threw right-handed, he stood 6 feet tall at 180 pounds and signed with the Philadelphia Phillies as an amateur free agent in June 1954. Landrum debuted on September 28, 1957, starting both ends of a season-ending pair in center field for the Phillies, then did not surface in the majors again until 1960. Philadelphia traded him to the St. Louis Cardinals in September 1960, and he logged just 73 games and a .227 average across three Cardinals seasons before a June 1962 deal sent him to the Chicago Cubs. He is best remembered in Chicago, where he was the club's regular center fielder in 1965. That December the Cubs dealt him to the San Francisco Giants, and he played his last big-league game on July 21, 1966. Over eight seasons Landrum hit .234 with 12 home runs and 75 RBI in 456 games. He later worked in businesses in East Contra Costa County and died at his home in Pittsburg, California, on January 9, 2003, at age 66.
