1958 Topps #253 Don Mueller

About Don Mueller
Topps #253, a series three card, lists Mueller with the San Francisco Giants in the club's first season in San Francisco, though the Giants had sold him to the White Sox in March for an estimated $25,000. He hit .253 in 70 games for Chicago's second-place team. The card follows a 1957 in which he batted .258 for the Giants.
Don Mueller was a left-handed-hitting outfielder from the St. Louis area whose father Walter also played in the majors. He signed with the New York Giants in 1944 and spent ten seasons with them, becoming the regular right fielder in 1950. Known for putting the ball in play, he hit .333 in 1953, .342 in 1954 and .306 in 1955, and in 1954 led the National League with 212 hits and finished second to teammate Willie Mays for the batting title. He was an All-Star in 1954 and 1955 and hit .389 in the Giants' four-game sweep of Cleveland in the 1954 World Series. He was on base in the ninth inning of the 1951 pennant playoff game when he hurt his ankle sliding into third and was carried off just before Bobby Thomson's home run. He also hit five home runs in two days that September. He finished with the White Sox and retired with a .296 career average. In 2001 he was elected to the Brooklyn Dodgers Hall of Fame.
