About Ed Mayer

Mayer worked out of the Chicago Cubs bullpen in 1958, appearing in 19 games with a 2-2 record, a 3.80 ERA, 14 strikeouts in 23.2 innings and one save. His last big league outing came June 5 against the Phillies. His Topps card, #461 in the sixth and final series, pictures him as a Cub and is a rookie card.

Ed Mayer was a left-handed pitcher from San Francisco who worked parts of two seasons for the Chicago Cubs, 1957 and 1958. A Lowell High School product, he was named MVP of an American Legion all-star game in 1947 and received the trophy from Babe Ruth. At the University of California he threw a one-hitter against Santa Clara in 1952 before signing with the Red Sox. He went 17-8 at San Jose in 1953 and again at Greensboro in 1954, then was drafted by the Cardinals, pitched for Omaha under Johnny Keane, and joined the Cubs as the player to be named later in a trade that sent Jim King to St. Louis. His best pitch was a sinking fastball. He debuted at Wrigley Field on September 15, 1957, and went 2-2 with a 4.31 ERA over 22 big league games. A sore arm ended his time in the majors, and he finished with a 64-59 minor league record.
