1958 Topps #339 Fred Hatfield

About Fred Hatfield
Hatfield's 1958 Topps card is #339, from the fourth series, and shows him with the Cleveland Indians. He came to Cleveland from the White Sox with Minnie Minoso in the deal for Al Smith and Early Wynn. That April the Indians sent him to Cincinnati for reliever Bob Kelly and later reacquired him for cash. He got into just six games between the two clubs, hit .111, and it proved his last major-league season.
Fred Hatfield, nicknamed Scrap Iron, was a left-handed-hitting infielder from Lanett, Alabama, who played nine seasons in the majors between 1950 and 1958 with the Red Sox, Tigers, White Sox, Indians and Redlegs. He earned the nickname in the minors, where he led leagues in being hit by pitches. He worked mostly at third and second base, and SABR calls him the American League's slickest-fielding third baseman of 1952, when he led the circuit in fielding average and assists after a June trade from Boston to Detroit. He finished with 722 games, a .242 average, 25 home runs and 165 RBI. After playing he managed in the minors for 16 years, coached third base for the 1977 and 1978 Tigers, and was head baseball coach at Florida State from 1964 to 1968, where his teams won 161 games. He was inducted into the Florida State University Hall of Fame in 1999 and died in Tallahassee in 1998.
