About Jerry Kindall

Jerry Kindall's 1958 Topps #221 is a rookie card from the third print series, showing him with the Chicago Cubs. He had signed as a bonus baby after the 1956 College World Series triumph, and in 1957 he played 72 games, hitting .160 with six home runs and 12 RBI, mostly at second and third base. He played just three games for the Cubs in 1958 and was sent to Fort Worth.

Jerry Kindall was a right-handed infielder from St. Paul, Minnesota, who signed with the Chicago Cubs in June 1956 as a bonus baby, reportedly for $50,000, straight out of a College World Series title with the University of Minnesota. The bonus rule chained him to the big-league roster with almost no playing time, and only after hitting .164 and .160 did he get his apprenticeship: two seasons at Fort Worth in 1958 and 1959. He returned to the Cubs in 1960 and went to Cleveland in a November 1961 trade for pitcher Bobby Locke. He finished with the Minnesota Twins, starting 101 games at second base for the 1965 pennant winner before a torn leg muscle and rookie Frank Quilici cut his time; he never got into the World Series, and was released in the spring of 1966. Nine seasons left him at .213 in 742 games with 44 home runs, unusual pop for a middle infielder, and a glove Tommy John said kept him in the lineup. Cooperstown never called, but the College Baseball Hall of Fame took him in 2007 after 24 years as head coach at Arizona, where he won 860 games and three national championships.
