1958 Topps #284 Ray Katt

About Ray Katt
Katt's 1958 Topps card is #284, a single-player card in Series Four, sitting between Ray Shearer and Frank Robinson on the checklist. The card lists him with the San Francisco Giants, but he was traded back to St. Louis in April 1958, and his season was a backup role with the Cardinals: 19 games, 14 at catcher, and a .171 average with one home run and four RBI.
Ray Katt was a right-handed catcher from New Braunfels, Texas, who played eight seasons (1952-1959) for the New York Giants and St. Louis Cardinals. After years in the minors, including a 30-homer, 101-RBI year in 1953, he became the Giants' semi-regular catcher in 1954, hitting .255 with nine home runs while sharing the job with Wes Westrum. That year he had four passed balls in one inning, a National League record-tying total, while catching knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm. He did not play in the Giants' four-game World Series sweep. Katt was part of the June 1956 nine-player trade with the Cardinals that sent Alvin Dark and Red Schoendienst in opposite directions, then bounced to the Cubs and back to the Giants. He finished with a .232 average, 32 home runs and 120 RBI in 417 games. Afterward he coached in the majors and led Texas Lutheran's baseball team for 22 seasons, and its ballpark bears his name.
