About Stan Lopata

Lopata's 1958 with the Phillies was a struggle. Slowed by a bad right knee, he was hit in the head by a Larry Jackson pitch on June 8 and lost most of July to injury, finishing at .248 with 9 home runs and 33 RBI in 86 games. His 1958 Topps card, #353, sits in the fifth series and shows him as a Phillie.

Stan Lopata was a Detroit-born catcher who spent 13 seasons in the National League, almost all of them with the Philadelphia Phillies, finishing with the Milwaukee Braves. Signed out of the Detroit sandlots after Army service in Europe that earned him a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, he reached the Phillies in 1948 and backed up Andy Seminick on the 1950 Whiz Kids pennant winner. In 1954 he adopted a low semi-squat stance after advice from Rogers Hornsby, and Dizzy Dean joked that he looked like a man hitting from an easy chair. He also became the first National League catcher to wear glasses. His power peaked in 1956, when he hit 32 home runs with 95 RBI, and he was an All-Star in 1955 and 1956. He finished with 116 home runs in 853 games and a .254 average.
