About Bob Scheffing
Scheffing turns up twice in 1962 Topps: #72, a first-series combination card he shares with Steve Boros and Jake Wood, and #416, a fifth-series card from the manager subset. Both credit the Tigers. Detroit lost Al Kaline for a long stretch that summer to a broken collarbone, and the club that had won 101 games dropped 16 off that total, going 85-76 and finishing fourth in the ten-team American League, ten and a half games behind New York.
Robert Boden Scheffing, born in Overland, Missouri, on August 11, 1913, was a catcher, manager and front-office executive most often identified with the Chicago Cubs. He began his pro career in the Cardinals' farm system in 1935, spent 1939 as a 25-year-old playing manager in Class D, served in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II, and reached the majors with the Cubs by way of the 1940 Rule 5 draft. Over eight big-league seasons as a catcher with the Cubs, Cincinnati and St. Louis he batted .263 with 357 hits in 517 games. After managing the Los Angeles Angels to 107 wins and the 1956 Pacific Coast League championship, he took over the Cubs in 1957 and went 208-254 in three seasons, then managed the Detroit Tigers from 1961 into 1963, finishing 210-173 there. He later scouted and broadcast for Detroit, joined the Mets front office in December 1965, and was promoted to general manager in January 1970; the club won the 1973 National League pennant before losing a seven-game World Series to Oakland. He died in Phoenix in 1985.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
