1962 Topps #239 Cecil Butler

About Cecil Butler
Number 239 sits in the third series, and it is the rookie card of a pitcher who crowded his whole good stretch into six weeks. Five days after his April 23 debut he relieved at Colt Stadium for four and one-third scoreless, three-hit innings against the expansion Houston Colt .45s, taking the win in a 9-3 comeback. On May 13 he went the distance on six hits at the Polo Grounds to beat the Mets, 3-2.
Cecil Dean "Slewfoot" Butler, born October 23, 1937 in Dallas, Georgia, was a 6-foot-4 right-handed pitcher who spent his entire professional career - nine seasons, 1957 through 1965 - inside the Milwaukee Braves organization. Newspapers rated his fastball among the best in the system, and manager Birdie Tebbetts pegged him in early 1962 as the reliever the Braves had been hunting for. He won a big-league roster spot out of spring training that year, debuted on April 23, and took both of his career decisions in the weeks that followed. Then a severe elbow injury suffered after a May 19 start left him slow to recover and effectively ended the climb: two more appearances in 1962, a full year back in the minors, two ineffective outings in July 1964, and retirement after the 1965 season. He finished 2-0 with a 3.31 ERA, 33 hits and nine walks allowed and 24 strikeouts across 35 1/3 innings in 11 games. He worked as a painting contractor for roughly 40 years afterward and died at his home in Dallas, Georgia, on October 2, 2019.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
