About Red Schoendienst

Card #575 closes out the 1962 set in the short-printed seventh series, so it carries the scarcity premium that trails every high number in that run. It is also the last Topps card to picture Schoendienst as a player. The 1961 season standing behind it was pure bench work: 72 games, 120 at-bats and a .300 average at thirty-eight, his first year back in a Cardinals uniform after the lung surgery. He signed to coach for 1962 and was also carried on the active roster.

Albert Fred "Red" Schoendienst, known as Red from boyhood for his curly red hair and freckles, was a switch-hitting second baseman who played 19 major league seasons from 1945 to 1963 for the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants and Milwaukee Braves. He made ten All-Star teams and had one of the surest gloves in the National League, retiring with a .289 average, 2,449 hits and 84 home runs. He led the league in steals as a 1945 rookie left fielder, hit a career-best .342 in 1953, won the 1946 World Series with St. Louis and the 1957 title with Milwaukee, then was diagnosed with tuberculosis after the 1958 season and lost part of a lung to surgery in February 1959. Released by the Braves after 1960, he came home to St. Louis and finished as a player-coach through 1963. He coached the 1964 champions, replaced Johnny Keane as manager for 1965, and led the Cardinals to back-to-back pennants in 1967 and 1968, winning the 1967 World Series over Boston and taking National League Manager of the Year honors both seasons. His twelve full seasons at the helm trail only Tony La Russa's in club history. He coached one more championship team in 1982 and reached the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989 through the Veterans Committee.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1962 Topps #575 card?

It is card #575 of the 600-card 1962 Topps Baseball set, picturing Red Schoendienst of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Why is #575 harder to find?

It is a high number card (cards 523-598) from the seventh print series, distributed last and in the smallest quantity - the toughest cards in the set and home to all 42 short prints and the Rookie Parade. It is also a short print card (42 cards, all in 523-598). Printed in smaller quantity than the rest of the seventh series.

How many cards are in the 1962 Topps Baseball set?

600 cards, tracked as 708 collectible states. The numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps, but three different cards were printed #139 - two Hal Reniff poses, catalogued 139a and 139b, and the Babe Hits 60 Babe Ruth Special, 139c - so 598 numbers make 600 cards; 93 cards carry catalogued print variations, the series-2 green tints among them, that the master set counts separately.
