1962 Topps #442 Wes Stock

About Wes Stock
Baltimore used Stock harder in 1962 than in any season before it: 53 appearances, 26 of them finishing the game, 65 innings, three saves, and a 3-2 record behind a 4.43 ERA, the highest mark of his Orioles years. The season also holds the front end of his best-known run - from July 12, 1962, to July 19, 1964, he did not lose a big-league game. Card #442 landed in Topps' fifth series and shows him in an Orioles cap during the first months of that unbeaten stretch.
Wesley Gay Stock was born April 10, 1934, in Longview, Washington, and grew up in Allyn, where his father ran a combination tavern, grocery, and service station and his mother served as the local postmistress. He graduated from Shelton High in 1952, pitching for the town team, and walked on with the Cougars at Washington State College under coach Buck Bailey before signing with the Baltimore Orioles in 1956 for $4,000. He went 14-6 at Class C Aberdeen, spent two years in the Army, and reached the majors on April 19, 1959. Listed at 6-foot-2 and 188 pounds, the right-hander pitched in 321 games over nine seasons for the Orioles and Kansas City Athletics, all but three in relief, going 27-13 with a 3.60 ERA, 22 saves, and 365 strikeouts in 517 1/3 innings. Baltimore traded him to Kansas City for catcher Charlie Lau on June 15, 1964, and he threw his last big-league inning in 1967. He then coached for decades - pitching coach for the Athletics in 1967, 1973-76 and 1984-86, the Milwaukee Brewers from 1970 to 1972, and the Seattle Mariners from 1977 to 1981 - and was on Oakland's World Series winners of 1973 and 1974 before calling Mariners games on television in 1982 and 1983.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
