About Bob Oldis
Card #404 is a fifth-series number, and it reports the best year Oldis ever had at the plate: 38 games for the 1962 Phillies, 21 hits in 80 at-bats, a .263 average and 10 RBI. On August 9 he led off the sixth inning against Dodgers rookie Pete Richert with the only home run of his major-league career. On June 4 he and Iowa-born pitcher Jack Hamilton caught Maury Wills stealing twice in one game, the only time all season anyone got the Dodgers shortstop twice on his way to a record 104 steals. Collectors file the card as an uncorrected error: the back gives his birth date as January 5, 1929, a year later than he was actually born.
Robert Carl Oldis was born January 5, 1928, in Preston, Iowa. His father, the town postmaster, sent him to a five-week instructional camp in Cocoa, Florida, in January 1949, and Washington signed him out of it after three weeks, with no bonus. A right-handed catcher, he reached the Senators in 1953 and spent parts of three seasons in Washington working behind their regular receivers. Pittsburgh drafted him out of the Yankees organization in the November 1959 Rule 5 draft for $25,000, and he earned a World Series ring with the 1960 Pirates before the club sold him to the Philadelphia Phillies after the 1961 season. He played through 1963 and finished at .237 with 56 hits and 22 RBI in 135 games across seven big-league seasons. Oldis stayed in the game for decades, coaching for the Phillies, Twins and Expos, managing in the minors and scouting for the Phillies, Expos and Marlins; fellow scouts voted him major-league scout of the year in 2002. He died September 21, 2025, in Gilbert, Arizona, at 97.
