The story on this card
Topps called card 412 the Dodgers' Big Three and put Johnny Podres, Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax on one card, a lefty-righty-lefty trio of Los Angeles starters. The 1962 season behind them explains the salute: the Dodgers won 102 games, a Los Angeles club record at the time, but dropped a three-game tiebreaker to the Giants, and Drysdale took the Cy Young Award, which in those years was one honor covering both leagues. Podres had started the 1962 opener; Koufax had thrown a no-hitter on June 30. The card sits in the set's fifth print series.
Brooklyn's unlikeliest Game 7 starter, Podres shut out the Yankees 2-0 in 1955 for the only title the borough ever won and the first World Series MVP award, then pitched on to four rings, four All-Star teams and 148 wins. Don Drysdale was the Dodgers' intimidating right-hander for 14 seasons, the 1962 Cy Young winner and a three-time World Series champion who in 1968 ran off six straight shutouts and a record 58 2/3 scoreless innings. Sandy Koufax was the Dodgers' left-hander nicknamed 'the Left Arm of God,' whose five-year run of dominance from 1962 to 1966 brought three unanimous Cy Young Awards and four no-hitters, including a perfect game, before an arthritic elbow forced his retirement at 30.
