About this card

This is one of the eleven combination cards in the 1963 Topps set (#18, 43, 68, 138, 173, 218, 242, 306, 331, 392, 412), each pairing two or three players under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.

The story on this card

Topps paired these two starters as Series Foes for their head-to-head roles in the 1962 World Series between the Yankees and the Giants. Stafford started and won Game 3 for New York, finishing the game despite a line drive off his shin in the eighth inning of a 3-2 win. Pierce started Game 6 for San Francisco and pitched a three-hit complete game as the Giants won 5-2, evening the Series and forcing Game 7. The card is a combination card, number 331 in Topps' fourth series. Neither pitcher's individual statistics appear on this card; the whole premise is the October matchup, one man representing each pennant winner.

Bill Stafford - Yankees sinkerballer, the winning pitcher on the day Roger Maris hit his 61st home run and the man who finished Game Three of the 1962 World Series after a line drive caught him on the shin. A slightly built left-hander with a big fastball, Pierce was the American League's finest southpaw of the 1950s for the Chicago White Sox, then wound up his career helping the San Francisco Giants to a pennant.
