The story on this card
Knoop's 1964 Topps card, #502, is a Rookie Stars issue he shares with fellow Angel Bob Lee, from the set's sixth print series and a recognized rookie card for both players. It arrived the same winter the Angels claimed Knoop from the Milwaukee Braves organization in the Rule 5 draft, and he answered by playing every game of his rookie season as the club's regular second baseman, batting .216 with 7 home runs while ranking fifth among AL second basemen in fielding percentage. A slick-fielding second baseman for the 1960s Angels, Bobby Knoop won three straight Gold Gloves from 1966 to 1968, started the 1966 All-Star Game, and helped anchor one of the era's steadiest double-play defenses.
1964 Topps #502, from the set's sixth print series, is part of the Rookie Stars subset and pairs Lee with fellow Angels rookie Bobby Knoop. Lee debuted with the Angels that April, working one scoreless relief inning against Washington in his first appearance, and went on to finish 6-5 with a 1.51 ERA over 64 games, setting a personal best with 111 strikeouts. Right-handed reliever from Ottumwa, Iowa, who anchored the Angels bullpen for three strong seasons, made the 1965 All-Star team, and later closed out his career with brief stops in Los Angeles and Cincinnati.
