About Bill Rigney
Rigney got the Angels back over .500 at 82-80, good for fifth place, 17 games behind the pennant-winning Yankees and still playing home games in the Dodgers' park. Dean Chance carried the staff with a 20-9 record and a 1.65 ERA that won him the Cy Young Award, and shortstop Jim Fregosi hit .277 with 18 home runs and 72 runs batted in. It was one of only two winning seasons in Rigney's nine years running the club. Card #383 sits in the fifth series, a notch scarcer than the low series. He appears alone with the Los Angeles Angels.
Bill Rigney was an infielder and manager born January 29, 1918, in Alameda, California. He played third base, shortstop and second base for the New York Giants from 1946 through 1953, made the National League All-Star team in 1948, and appeared in the 1951 World Series strictly as a pinch-hitter, batting four times in four games and singling once. After managing the Giants' top farm club, the Minneapolis Millers, to the 1955 American Association pennant, he took over the parent club in 1956, serving as its last manager in New York and its first in San Francisco before being fired on June 17, 1960. In 1961 he became the first manager in Los Angeles Angels history, and the expansion club's 86-76 third-place finish in 1962 earned him The Sporting News Manager of the Year award. He ran the Angels until May 27, 1969, then led the Minnesota Twins to the 1970 American League West title, the only postseason berth of his 18 seasons as a big-league manager, and closed his managing career back in the Giants' dugout in 1976 with an overall record of 1,239-1,321. He was inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and died February 20, 2001, in Walnut Creek, California.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1964 Topps #383 card?
It is card #383 of the 587-card 1964 Topps Baseball set, picturing Bill Rigney of the Los Angeles Angels. This is one of the twenty manager cards in the 1964 Topps set, one for each franchise. Nineteen are printed Manager; #486 Bob Kennedy is printed Head Coach because the Cubs were still running their College of Coaches.
Why is #383 harder to find?
It is a series 5-6 card. Cards from the fifth and sixth print series (#371-522) are a step tougher to find than #1-370; availability in 1964 runs in three tiers, not a cliff.
How many cards are in the 1964 Topps Baseball set?
587 cards, tracked as 589 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 587 with no gaps, and no number carries two different cards; two cards - #4, the A.L. Pitching Leaders, and #517, the seventh-series checklist - carry a catalogued back variation that the master set counts separately.
