1964 Topps #518 Carl Bouldin

About Carl Bouldin
Bouldin's fourth big-league season was also his last. He worked nine games for Washington, finished 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA across 25 innings, and made his final major league appearance on July 5, 1964, wearing number 18 on a $6,000 salary. He spent most of that summer in the minors, first at Toronto and then with the Indianapolis Indians, the Chicago White Sox affiliate in the Pacific Coast League. Card number 518 is his solo Topps issue with the Senators, printed in the same sixth series as the year before. His rookie card is the four-player entry from 1963.
Carl Edward Bouldin, born September 17, 1939 in Germantown, Kentucky and raised in Norwood, Ohio, was a true two-sport man at the University of Cincinnati. A guard on the basketball team, he was co-captain of the 1960-61 Bearcats, scored a team-high 21 points in the national semifinal rout of Utah, then added 16 in the 70-65 overtime win over Ohio State that brought Cincinnati its first NCAA championship; that club finished 27-3. The Cincinnati Royals took him in the 14th round of the 1961 NBA draft, but Bouldin picked baseball and signed with the Washington Senators as a switch-hitting right-handed pitcher. He reached the majors that same September and worked parts of four seasons for Washington, going 3-8 with a 6.15 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 27 games, spending most of those years in the minors at Syracuse, Toronto and Indianapolis. His last professional season came in 1965. Cincinnati put him in its athletics hall of fame in 1982, and in 1992 he was an inaugural inductee into the Norwood High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
