1964 Topps #372 Howie Koplitz

About Howie Koplitz
Card 372 lists Koplitz with the Washington Senators for the first time, on a fifth-series card. Washington had taken him from Detroit in the Rule 5 draft on December 2, 1963. The work that followed was slight: six appearances for Gil Hodges, 17 innings, no decisions and a 4.76 ERA, wearing 16. Most of 1964 went to Triple-A instead, split between Toronto and Tacoma, where the won-lost line read 2-12 against a tidy 2.92 combined ERA - about as unlucky a summer as a pitcher can have.
Howard "Howie" Koplitz (May 4, 1938 - January 2, 2012) was a right-handed pitcher born and raised in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, who signed with the Detroit Tigers as an amateur free agent out of Oshkosh High School in 1956. His sixth year in the Detroit farm system, 1961, was the one that made his name: 23-3 with a 2.11 ERA for the Double-A Birmingham Barons, a no-hitter, Southern Association Most Valuable Player and The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year. A September call-up followed, and the first man he faced in the majors, at Fenway Park, was Carl Yastrzemski - he struck him out. Koplitz worked 54 big league games, 19 as a starter, over parts of five seasons (1961-1962, 1964-1966) for the Tigers and, after Washington claimed him in the Rule 5 draft, the Senators, finishing 9-7 with a 4.21 ERA. A shoulder injury in 1966 spring training ended his major league career at 28. He went home to Oshkosh for 38 years as a Postal Service clerk, coached baseball at Lourdes High School and ran American Legion ball in town.
