The story on this card
Gagliano's rookie card is 1964 Topps #568, 'N. League 1964 Rookie Stars,' a seventh-series high number he shares with San Francisco outfielder Cap Peterson. He debuted April 16, 1963, going 2-for-5 in ten games. The Sporting News tabbed him the hardest worker in that spring's camp, and he hit his first big league home run June 20 at Busch Stadium off Giants right-hander Jim Duffalo before the Cardinals farmed him to Jacksonville on July 19. Left off the Series roster that October, he was still voted a three-quarter share. Phil Gagliano was a St. Louis Cardinals utility man who covered second, third, first and the outfield corners over twelve seasons, played in the 1967 and 1968 World Series, and later ranked among the majors' top pinch hitters.
Peterson's first Topps card, #568, is a high-numbered Rookie Stars multi-player card he shares with Phil Gagliano, pairing the Cardinals' Gagliano with the Giants' Peterson, and it stands as his recognized rookie card. It came from Topps' seventh and final print series of 1964, the block that always carried the year's high-number cards. Peterson was 21 that year, appearing in 66 games for San Francisco while splitting his limited playing time mostly in the outfield. A Tacoma-born outfielder who reached the majors with the Giants in 1962 and later played for the Senators and Indians, his nickname taken from his own initials; after retiring he ran his family's construction business back home.
