1964 Topps #521 Tom Satriano

About Tom Satriano
Card #521 is a series-6 card in the 1964 set, and it followed a lost 1963 for the Los Angeles Angels: a six-month Army Reserve commitment at Fort Ord kept him out of camp until 12 days before opening day, and he managed only 23 games and a .180 average. Farmed out first to Hawaii and then to Class-AA Nashville with instructions to try catching, he made his major-league catching debut on September 24, throwing out Phil Linz on a steal attempt, and started behind the plate for the first time four days later.
Tom Satriano was born August 28, 1940, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Los Angeles, starring at Loyola High School before enrolling at the University of Southern California. He was an All-American third baseman in 1960 and set an NCAA record with 10 hits in the five-game title series of the Trojans' 1961 championship run. He signed with the expansion Los Angeles Angels in July 1961 for a $50,000 bonus and debuted July 23. Sent to Nashville in 1963 to try catching, he made his major-league catching debut that September and worked 321 of his 674 games behind the plate. His best year was 1968, when he set career highs in hits, home runs and RBI and was voted the Angels' Most Valuable Player. A June 1969 trade for Joe Azcue sent him to Boston, where he closed a ten-year career with a .225 average, 21 home runs and 157 RBI. Known as 'Satch' and 'Tommy Trojan,' he later ran the consulting firm Satriano and Hilton for 25 years.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1964 Topps #521 card?
It is card #521 of the 587-card 1964 Topps Baseball set, picturing Tom Satriano of the Los Angeles Angels.
Why is #521 harder to find?
It is a series 5-6 card. Cards from the fifth and sixth print series (#371-522) are a step tougher to find than #1-370; availability in 1964 runs in three tiers, not a cliff.
How many cards are in the 1964 Topps Baseball set?
587 cards, tracked as 589 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 587 with no gaps, and no number carries two different cards; two cards - #4, the A.L. Pitching Leaders, and #517, the seventh-series checklist - carry a catalogued back variation that the master set counts separately.
