The story on this card
Knowles made his major-league debut with Baltimore on April 18, 1965, working out of the bullpen before returning to Triple-A Rochester for most of the season. This series-7 high-numbered Rookie Stars card, from the short-print zone, pictures him alongside Richie Scheinblum of the Cleveland organization and Don Buschhorn of the Kansas City Athletics, and it is the rookie card of Scheinblum and Buschhorn. A left-handed reliever who logged 16 big-league seasons and became the first pitcher ever to appear in all seven games of a World Series, closing out Oakland's 1973 championship.
Scheinblum made his major league debut as a September call-up with Cleveland in 1965, used exclusively as a pinch runner before drawing his first plate appearance as a pinch hitter later that month. That year he split his minor league season between Salinas, where he hit .318, and Pawtucket. This card is a high number from the seventh and final print series, inside the short-print zone, a multi-player Rookie Stars issue pairing him with Darold Knowles and Don Buschhorn, and is recognized as his rookie card. A switch-hitting outfielder for six major league clubs from 1965 to 1974, he made the 1972 American League All-Star team while batting .300 for the Kansas City Royals.
Don Buschhorn's card comes from the 1965 Topps series 7 high numbers, inside the short-print zone, sharing a Rookie Stars slot with Darold Knowles of the Baltimore Orioles and Richie Scheinblum of the Cleveland Indians, alongside Buschhorn representing the Kansas City Athletics. It stands as his recognised rookie card, issued the same year he made his major league debut and worked the entire season on the Athletics' staff, striking out the first two hitters he faced against the Minnesota Twins. Don Buschhorn was a right-hander who spent his lone big-league season, 1965, on the Kansas City Athletics roster, striking out the first two batters he ever faced.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1965 Topps #577 card?
It is card #577 of the 598-card 1965 Topps Baseball set, picturing Darold Knowles, Richie Scheinblum and Don Buschhorn. This is one of the 55 Rookie Stars cards in the 1965 Topps set, each picturing two to four young players - 126 players in all - under a team banner, except #577 and #581, which carry American League and National League banners over players from three clubs. Joe Morgan (#16), Steve Carlton (#477), Jim (Catfish) Hunter (#526) and Tony Perez (#581) make their Topps debuts on these cards.
Is 1965 Topps #577 a rookie card?
Yes - #577 is the rookie card of Richie Scheinblum and Don Buschhorn. Darold Knowles had already appeared on an earlier Topps card, so it is not his rookie card.
Is 1965 Topps #577 a scarce card?
It is a high number card from the seventh and last series, #507-598. Unlike most 1960s Topps sets the 1965 highs are not scarce as a run - the premium sits on the short-printed cards inside #523-598. It is also a short-print zone card. Forty-four of the 76 cards in #523-598 were short-printed; #507-522 was not. The zone is stated as a range because the catalogs disagree on exactly which cards, so no single card is marked.
How many cards are in the 1965 Topps Baseball set?
598 cards, tracked as 600 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps and no printed-number collisions, and two checklist cards - #79 and #508 - carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately.
