The story on this card
Traded from the Giants to the California Angels going into 1965, Cardenal broke through with his first extended big-league look under manager Bill Rigney, batting .250 with 11 home runs and 57 RBI while stealing 37 bases, three of them steals of home. His 1965 Topps #374 is a recognized rookie card, sharing the Rookie Stars panel with fellow Angels outfielder Dick Simpson. Cuban-born outfielder who spent eighteen big-league seasons with nine clubs, prized for speed and a strong arm; his best years came with the Chicago Cubs, and he retired a .275 career hitter with 329 stolen bases.
Card #374, a series-5 'Rookie Stars' issue, is Simpson's third and final Angels card, again pairing him with an outfield prospect from the same system, Jose Cardenal, whose rookie card it is and who would go on to a much longer big-league career than Simpson's own. It appeared during what proved to be Simpson's last season in a Los Angeles Angels uniform before an off-season trade sent him elsewhere that winter. Dick Simpson was an Angels-bred outfielder who spent seven big-league seasons with six clubs, best known as one of three players, with pitchers Milt Pappas and Jack Baldschun, the Reds got from Baltimore for Frank Robinson in December 1965.
