The story on this card
Egan's rookie card is #486, "Angels 1965 Rookie Stars," a series-6 issue he shares with fellow Angels prospect Pat Rogan. Behind it sits a summer of spot duty for Los Angeles: eighteen games scattered from late May to a September 25 start at Baltimore, 10 hits in 38 at-bats for a .263 average, no home runs and three runs batted in. He turned 19 that June, and Topps would not give him a card of his own for another year. Tom Egan was a 6-foot-4 catcher who signed with the Angels for a $100,000 bonus and debuted at 18 in 1965, spent ten seasons with California and the White Sox, and caught Nolan Ryan's third no-hitter in 1974.
This Angels Rookie Stars card, #486 in Topps' sixth series for 1965, pairs Pat Rogan with catching prospect Tom Egan, each representing the Los Angeles Angels. The back would have reported Rogan coming off his 1964 season at Triple-A Hawaii, where he went 9-11 with a 4.53 ERA, before he moved down to Double-A El Paso in 1965. It stands as a recognized rookie card for Rogan, who never advanced beyond the minors. A pitcher in the Angels farm system for seven seasons, Pat Rogan topped out at Triple-A and never reached the majors, finishing 66-57 in the minors.
