1965 Topps #422 Aubrey Gatewood

About Aubrey Gatewood
This 1965 Topps card, from the set's fifth series, follows Gatewood's 1964 season with the Los Angeles Angels, when he spent the first three months in Triple-A before returning to the big club in July. Pitching in 15 games, including seven starts, he posted a 2.24 ERA over 60 innings, setting up what would become his only full major-league season the following year.
Aubrey Gatewood was a right-handed pitcher from Little Rock, Arkansas who reached the majors with the Los Angeles Angels in September 1963. In his first big-league start he threw a complete-game win over the Boston Red Sox, allowing just one run. He worked mostly in relief over the next two seasons, with 1965 standing as his only full year in the majors, appearing in 46 games for the Angels. After 1965 he spent time in the minors and moved through several organizations before a brief return with the Atlanta Braves in 1970, his final big-league season. Across four seasons and 68 games he went 8-9 with a 2.78 ERA. He signed with Detroit out of Arkansas State in 1960 and was taken by the Angels in the American League's inaugural expansion draft before ever reaching the majors with them.
