1965 Topps #579 Dick Smith

About Dick Smith
By 1965 Smith had moved to the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, where his major league time was brief: ten games, nearly all in the outfield, closing out his big-league career that May. His 1965 Topps card comes from the set's seventh series and shows him with the Dodgers; the card is a high number inside the set's short-print zone.
Dick Smith was an outfielder and first baseman born May 17, 1939, in Lebanon, Oregon. A right-handed hitter and thrower listed at 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, he broke into the major leagues with the New York Mets on July 20, 1963. He split his rookie season between the outfield and first base, then took on a larger role in 1964, again dividing time between the two positions as the young Mets continued to rebuild. He moved to the Los Angeles Dodgers organization and appeared in a brief stretch of games for Los Angeles in 1965, his final major league season, working almost exclusively in the outfield. Across three seasons with the Mets and Dodgers, Smith batted .218 with seven RBI and 18 runs scored in 76 games. He never earned an All-Star selection or a major award, and he did not appear in postseason play. Smith died on February 19, 2012, in Medford, Oregon, at age 72.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1965 Topps #579 card?
It is card #579 of the 598-card 1965 Topps Baseball set, picturing Dick Smith of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Is 1965 Topps #579 a scarce card?
It is a high number card from the seventh and last series, #507-598. Unlike most 1960s Topps sets the 1965 highs are not scarce as a run - the premium sits on the short-printed cards inside #523-598. It is also a short-print zone card. Forty-four of the 76 cards in #523-598 were short-printed; #507-522 was not. The zone is stated as a range because the catalogs disagree on exactly which cards, so no single card is marked.
How many cards are in the 1965 Topps Baseball set?
598 cards, tracked as 600 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps and no printed-number collisions, and two checklist cards - #79 and #508 - carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately.
