About Dick Stigman

Card 548 is a seventh-series high number from the short-print zone, and it caught his last season in Minnesota. Beaten out of the rotation by the 1964 slide, he worked as a swing man, going 4-2 with a 4.37 ERA over 33 games, eight of them starts, and picking up four saves. A foot injury cost him better than two weeks at midseason and he started just one game after July 21; his final Twins appearance was a relief win over Kansas City on September 6. Minnesota won the American League pennant, the club's first since its 1961 move to Minneapolis-Saint Paul, but he only warmed up in the seven-game World Series loss to the Dodgers and never got in.

Richard Lewis Stigman, born January 24, 1936, in Nimrod, Minnesota, was a left-handed pitcher who spent seven major-league seasons with the Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox between 1960 and 1966. Three days after he graduated from Sebeka High School in the spring of 1954, the Cleveland scout who had signed Bob Feller and Bob Lemon drove out to sign him, having watched the strapping teenager strike out 21 batters in a seven-inning perfect game. Stigman climbed the Indians' farm system behind a 17-9, 1.44 ERA season at Class D Vidalia in 1956, reached Cleveland in 1960 and was traded to his home-state Twins two years later. Minnesota got his best work, both as a starter and out of the bullpen, and he was on the roster when the Twins won the 1965 American League pennant. Over 235 big-league games he went 46-54 with a 4.03 ERA and 755 strikeouts. He became a Minneapolis-area businessman afterward, and a park in Nimrod called Stigman's Mound carries his name.

It is card #548 of the 598-card 1965 Topps Baseball set, picturing Dick Stigman of the Minnesota Twins.

Is 1965 Topps #548 a scarce card?

It is a high number card from the seventh and last series, #507-598. Unlike most 1960s Topps sets the 1965 highs are not scarce as a run - the premium sits on the short-printed cards inside #523-598. It is also a short-print zone card. Forty-four of the 76 cards in #523-598 were short-printed; #507-522 was not. The zone is stated as a range because the catalogs disagree on exactly which cards, so no single card is marked.

How many cards are in the 1965 Topps Baseball set?

598 cards, tracked as 600 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps and no printed-number collisions, and two checklist cards - #79 and #508 - carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately.
