1965 Topps #595 Don Lee

About Don Lee
Lee's 1965 season with the Angels was his last in that uniform, and a brief one. He worked strictly in relief, ten games and 14 innings, and was charged with an 0-1 record and a 6.43 ERA. On June 1 the Angels traded him to the Houston Astros in exchange for Al Spangler, and he made seven more appearances out of the Houston bullpen, giving up three earned runs in eight innings. Card #595 is a high number from the seventh series of the 1965 set, inside its short-print zone. It lists him with the Los Angeles Angels.
Donald Edward Lee, a 6-foot-4 right-hander born February 26, 1934, in Globe, Arizona, pitched at the University of Arizona before the Detroit Tigers signed him as an amateur free agent in June 1956. He debuted for Detroit in April 1957, went to the Milwaukee Braves in an October 1959 trade, and landed in Washington that November when the Senators took him in the Rule 5 draft. He moved with that franchise to Minnesota, then pitched for the Los Angeles Angels, Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs, making his last appearance in August 1966. A swingman who shuttled between the rotation and the bullpen, Lee peaked in 1962, when a season divided between the Twins and Angels produced career highs of 11 wins, 102 strikeouts, two shutouts and 205 1/3 innings. Nine seasons left him 40-44 with a 3.61 ERA, 467 strikeouts and 11 saves in 244 games. His father was Thornton Lee, a 22-game winner for the 1941 White Sox, and the two share an oddity: Ted Williams is the only man to homer off both a father and his son, reaching Thornton in September 1939 and Don in September 1960.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1965 Topps #595 card?
It is card #595 of the 598-card 1965 Topps Baseball set, picturing Don Lee of the Los Angeles Angels.
Is 1965 Topps #595 a scarce card?
It is a high number card from the seventh and last series, #507-598. Unlike most 1960s Topps sets the 1965 highs are not scarce as a run - the premium sits on the short-printed cards inside #523-598. It is also a short-print zone card. Forty-four of the 76 cards in #523-598 were short-printed; #507-522 was not. The zone is stated as a range because the catalogs disagree on exactly which cards, so no single card is marked.
How many cards are in the 1965 Topps Baseball set?
598 cards, tracked as 600 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps and no printed-number collisions, and two checklist cards - #79 and #508 - carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately.
