1965 Topps #326 Dwight Siebler

About Dwight Siebler
Card #326 comes from the fourth print series, and shows Siebler with the Twins, who went on to win the American League pennant that year. Siebler himself spent most of the season yo-yoing between Minnesota and the Denver Bears of the Pacific Coast League, filling in during July for injured starter Dave Boswell before being optioned back down in August as the club prepared for a pennant push.
Dwight Siebler was a right-handed pitcher from Columbus, Nebraska who signed with the Philadelphia Phillies out of the University of Nebraska for a $20,000 bonus. He hurt his elbow throwing a fastball to Harmon Killebrew in his first big-league spring training game in 1962, permanently costing him velocity off his fastball. The Twins purchased his contract from the Phillies system in August 1963, and he immediately turned in two complete-game wins in his rookie stretch run, beating Washington 10-1 and Detroit 3-1. Unable to stick as a starter, Siebler spent most of 1964 and 1965 shuttling to Triple-A Atlanta and Denver while working to rebuild his repertoire around a hard curve and a screwball-change he learned from teammate Ruben Gomez. His only full big-league season came in 1966, when he worked 23 games, with two starts, for Minnesota, picked up his final major-league win and his only save. He pitched two games for the Twins in 1967 before retiring, finishing with a 4-3 career record over five seasons.
