About Jerry Fosnow

Fosnow's only Topps card, #529, is a seventh-series high number from the short-print zone at the tail of the 1965 set, and it doubles as his rookie card. One big league season stood behind it: seven relief outings for Minnesota in 1964, an 0-1 record and a 10.97 ERA. The 1965 season went better - 29 games, 3-3, a 4.44 ERA and two saves - until a sore arm in July sent him to Denver for good. Minnesota won the pennant without him; he drew two-thirds of a World Series share.

Jerry Fosnow was a 6-foot-4 left-handed reliever whose entire major league career came with the Minnesota Twins: 36 games across 1964 and 1965. Born September 21, 1940, in Deshler, Ohio, he signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1959 for a $500 bonus and went 15-4 for the Class D Selma Cloverleafs, throwing a playoff no-hitter. He moved up to Minot of the Class C Northern League, was released by Dubuque in 1961, then caught on with Minnesota in 1962 and worked through Wilson to Triple-A Atlanta, where manager Jack McKeon converted him into a relief pitcher. He debuted at Baltimore on June 29, 1964. A winter with pitching coach Johnny Sain put a dip in his curveball, and in 1965 he beat the Yankees on Opening Day, struck out Roger Maris to smother a New York rally, and saved a game at Yankee Stadium. He finished 3-4 with a 5.65 ERA, tried minor league comebacks through 1967, then built a business career with Gulf Oil and American Personnel Services.
