1965 Topps #334 Vic Roznovsky

About Vic Roznovsky
Card #334, print series 4, shows Roznovsky with the Cubs, a recognized rookie card. 1965 was his busiest big-league season: a career-high 71 games for Chicago, a .221 average with 3 home runs and 15 RBIs. His first career homer came May 9 at Wrigley Field off Houston's Ken Johnson, cheered on by family back in Texas via television; a three-run shot on May 26 at Shea Stadium against the Mets helped seal an 8-6 Cubs win.
Vic Roznovsky was a left-handed hitting catcher from Shiner, Texas, who broke into pro ball with Pittsburgh in 1958 after a rodeo-ground tryout, then survived a release and a position switch before reaching the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 1964. His busiest year came in 1965, when he caught for Chicago and hit three home runs. Traded to Baltimore in 1966 for outfielder Carl Warwick, he served as a backup behind Andy Etchebarren on the Orioles' pennant-winning and World Series champion club, filling in for extended stretches when Etchebarren was hurt. In August 1966 he hit a pinch homer against Boston that cut a ninth-inning deficit, immediately followed by a game-tying pinch homer from Boog Powell, an American League first for back-to-back pinch-hit homers. Back and leg trouble that season traced to a ruptured disc, which was surgically repaired that winter. He remained a backup catcher in Baltimore before finishing his career with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1969. He batted .218 with 4 home runs over parts of five major league seasons.
