1966 Topps #545 Dick Green

About Dick Green
Green rebounded in 1966 under new manager Alvin Dark, who praised his range and hands, hitting .250 with 9 home runs and a career-high 62 RBIs across 140 games while also being named team captain in late May. This 1966 Topps card, #545, is a high number from the set's seventh print series, picturing him with the Kansas City Athletics.
Richard Larry Green was born April 21, 1941, in Sioux City, Iowa, and grew up in Yankton and Mitchell, South Dakota, where he was an all-state football quarterback before signing with the Kansas City Athletics as an amateur free agent ahead of the 1960 season. He reached the majors on September 9, 1963, and won the starting second base job in 1964; aside from a slump-driven stretch at third base in 1967, he remained Kansas City and Oakland's primary second baseman for most of his twelve seasons. A slick-fielding infielder with quick hands and strong range, Green was never a big offensive threat but anchored the Athletics defense for over a decade. He missed most of 1972 recovering from back surgery but returned for the postseason, and was a key contributor to Oakland's three consecutive World Series championships from 1972 through 1974. In the 1974 World Series he went hitless in thirteen at-bats yet won the Babe Ruth Award for his fielding, starting six double plays over the five games. He retired after the 1974 season to run his family's moving business, finishing with a .240 career batting average, 960 hits, 80 home runs and 422 RBIs over 1,288 games.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
