About Dick Tracewski

Traded to Detroit for pitcher Phil Regan after the 1965 season, Tracewski was initially disappointed by the move but later called it the best thing that happened to his career; he opened 1966 in a new uniform, working mainly at second base for the Tigers in 81 games. Card #378, issued in the fifth series, is his first Topps card as a Tiger, reflecting the trade that began the second half of his playing career.

Dick Tracewski was a utility infielder who spent eight big league seasons split between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers, playing shortstop, second base and third base. Signed by Brooklyn out of Pennsylvania in 1953, he needed six minor league seasons plus two years of military duty before debuting in 1962 in the first-ever series at the new Dodger Stadium. He was a steady reserve on the Dodgers' 1963 and 1965 championship clubs, then went to Detroit in a trade for pitcher Phil Regan and helped the Tigers win the 1968 World Series. He retired as a player after the 1969 season with a .213 career average, then spent parts of three decades coaching for Detroit, including two brief stretches as interim manager. Teammates nicknamed him for his acrobatics at team pool parties.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
