About this card
The 46 Rookie Stars cards group a club's prospects under one number - except #553, which mixes Braves and Angels, and #591 NL Rookie Stars, which mixes Dodgers and Phillies. The class is headlined by #254 (Ferguson Jenkins, with Bill Sorrell) and #288 (Don Sutton, with Bill Singer).
The story on this card
Brown spent almost all of 1966 with the Giants, hitting .233 with seven home runs and 33 RBIs in 115 games as he settled into the outfield mix after his 1965 callup. His 1966 Topps card, #524, is a high number from the set's seventh print series, a recognized rookie card that pairs him with fellow Giants prospect Don Mason on a multi-player Rookie Stars card. Downtown Ollie Brown, a Giants and Padres outfielder famed for a cannon throwing arm, was San Diego's first-ever draft pick in 1968 and starred in the inaugural Padres season the following year.
Card #524 is a Rookie Stars entry from Topps' seventh and final 1966 series, pairing Mason with fellow Giants prospect Ollie Brown. High numbers from that late series are the scarce end of the set; it is also Mason's recognized rookie card. It arrived the same year he broke into the majors, though he saw only 26 plate appearances for San Francisco that season. Don Mason was a left-handed-hitting second baseman who played parts of eight National League seasons for the Giants and Padres, finishing with a .205 average over 336 games, remembered chiefly for steady glove work up the middle.
