About this card

The 46 Rookie Stars cards group a club's prospects under one number - except #553, which mixes Braves and Angels, and #591 NL Rookie Stars, which mixes Dodgers and Phillies. The class is headlined by #254 (Ferguson Jenkins, with Bill Sorrell) and #288 (Don Sutton, with Bill Singer).

The story on this card

Topps put Fernandez on cardboard before he had played a big-league inning: #584, 'Yankees 1966 Rookie Stars,' is a series-7 high number pairing him with left-hander Fritz Peterson, who was already 12-11 in the Yankee rotation. Fernandez spent that summer at Triple-A Toledo, hitting a career-high 23rd homer, a grand slam, on August 26 before breaking his right leg in a home-plate collision the next day. International League managers voted him their All-Star catcher and the circuit's best arm. It is his recognized rookie card. Frank Fernandez was a strong-armed Yankees catcher of the late 1960s, a backup to Jake Gibbs who walked 164 times against 145 career hits and hit 39 home runs while batting .199 over six seasons.

Peterson broke in with the Yankees at age 24, making his major league debut on April 15, 1966, and throwing a complete game to beat the Orioles in Baltimore. As New York's number-two starter that year, he went 12-11 with a 3.31 ERA, striking out 96 batters over 215 innings. This card, #584, is a high number in the set's final series and is recognized as his rookie card, shared with fellow Yankee Frank Fernandez under the Rookie Stars banner. A control artist who anchored the Yankees rotation from 1966 to 1973, Fritz Peterson won 20 games in 1970 and made that year's All-Star team before finishing his career with Cleveland and Texas.
