1967 Topps #349 Bob Chance

About Bob Chance
Card #349, from the fourth print series, is Chance in a Senators cap for a third straight year. He broke camp with Washington and was back in Hawaii before the end of May. Gil Hodges, who two springs earlier had talked him up as a batting champion, now said Chance and Dick Nen would both have to hit more to make the grade. He homered three times in 42 at-bats, one beating the Angels days before the demotion and another a three-run pinch-hit shot after a recall.
Bob Chance was a big, left-handed-hitting first baseman and outfielder from Statesboro, Georgia, signed by the Giants in 1960 and taken by Cleveland in the 1961 first-year player draft. He won the Eastern League Triple Crown at Class AA Charleston in 1963 and was called up that September. His 1964 rookie year with the Indians was the high point of a six-season major league career: 277 games, a .261 average, 24 home runs, 112 runs batted in. In Washington he fought his weight and a crowded first base, opening three straight seasons with the Senators and being sent down in each of them while he kept hitting at Triple-A Hawaii and Buffalo. He played 1969 and 1970 in Japan for the Sankei/Yakult Atoms, and died in Charleston, West Virginia, in 2013 at 73.
