1967 Topps #362 Darold Knowles

About Darold Knowles
By 1967 Knowles had been dealt to the Washington Senators, where manager Gil Hodges used him 61 times out of the bullpen; he posted a 2.70 ERA and 14 saves, including a ten-inning shutout relief stint against the Twins that August. This series-4 solo card captures him in his first full season anchoring the Senators' relief corps.
Darold Knowles was a left-handed relief pitcher from Brunswick, Missouri who spent 16 seasons in the majors from 1965 to 1980 with the Orioles, Phillies, Senators/Rangers, Athletics, Cubs, Expos and Cardinals. He built his reputation as a bullpen workhorse in Washington, posting career highs of 71 appearances and 27 saves in 1970, and earned his only All-Star selection in 1969. Traded to Oakland in 1971, he became a key late-inning arm alongside Rollie Fingers for the Athletics' three straight World Series champions of 1972-1974, and in the 1973 World Series he became the first pitcher ever to appear in all seven games, closing out the Game Seven clincher against the Mets. He later spent decades as a pitching coach in the Cardinals, Phillies, Pirates and Blue Jays organizations. He is a member of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
