About Dennis Ribant

Ribant's #527 card falls in Topps' sixth series and shows him with the Pittsburgh Pirates after an offseason trade sent him and Gary Kolb to Pittsburgh for Don Cardwell and Don Bosch. He split time between starting and relieving, going 9-8 with a 4.08 ERA over 38 games, 22 of them starts, for a Pirates club anchored by Roberto Clemente and Willie Stargell.

Dennis Ribant grew up on Detroit's near east side, where his father, a bakery foreman, taught him a curveball while Dennis and neighborhood friends sharpened their control throwing at a strike zone outlined on a schoolyard wall. A two-sport talent, he also played hockey for the Hamilton Red Wings before a dislocated elbow and interest from the Milwaukee Braves organization pointed him toward baseball full time. Signed by Milwaukee scout Ray Garland, he threw a nine-inning perfect game for Class D Quad Cities in 1961 and was named Midwest League Rookie of the Year. The Mets acquired him from the Braves' farm system in August 1964, and he made his major league debut the very next day. In 1966 he became the first full-time starting pitcher in Mets history to post a winning record, going 11-9, before trades sent him on to Pittsburgh, Detroit, the Chicago White Sox, St. Louis and Cincinnati. He closed out a six-year major league career in 1969.
