1967 Topps #540 Norm Cash

About Norm Cash
#216, Bengal Belters, is a third-series combination card pairing Cash with Al Kaline, whose locker sat next to his for years. #540 is the other kind of card entirely: a seventh-series high number and the only high number he carries in the decade's Topps sets. Both follow his 1966 season - .279, 32 home runs, 93 RBI - an All-Star summer in which he again led American League first basemen in assists.
Norman Dalton Cash reached the majors with the Chicago White Sox in 1958 and sat on their 1959 American League pennant winners. Chicago packaged him to Cleveland that December in the Minnie Minoso deal, and the following April, before Cash had played an inning for the Indians, Cleveland sent him on to Detroit for Steve Demeter, who lasted four more major league games. Cash held down first base for the Tigers for the next fifteen seasons. Ernie Harwell hung the nickname on him, borrowed from a Baltimore man of the same name, after a rare flare of temper. He was a five-time All-Star, the 1961 American League batting champion and a World Series winner in 1968, and he later admitted cheerfully to filling hollowed-out bats with cork, sawdust and glue. He was the only American Leaguer to hit 20 or more home runs in every season from 1961 through 1969, led the league in fielding twice and in assists three times, and finished with 377 home runs, fourth most by a left-handed hitter in league history behind Babe Ruth, Ted Williams and Lou Gehrig. Detroit released him in August 1974, and he drowned in 1986 after falling from a dock at Beaver Island, Michigan. Cash is in the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, not the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1967 Topps #540 card?
It is card #540 of the 609-card 1967 Topps Baseball set, picturing Norm Cash of the Detroit Tigers.
Why is #540 harder to find?
It is a high number card from the seventh and last print series, #534-609 - the scarce end of the set, holding both Hall of Fame rookies (Carew #569, Seaver #581). Twenty-two of the 76 are accepted double prints, so scarcity varies card by card inside the run.
How many cards are in the 1967 Topps Baseball set?
609 cards, tracked as 624 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 609 without a gap - no number was skipped and none was used twice - and 15 cards carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately.
