1967 Topps #561 Sandy Alomar

About Sandy Alomar
Card #561 in Topps' 1967 set is a high number issued in the seventh series, showing Alomar with the New York Mets. He appeared in 27 games that year split between the Mets and Chicago White Sox organizations, playing shortstop and second base and batting .081, a season he later described as the hardest of his career.
Santos "Sandy" Alomar signed with the Milwaukee Braves organization in 1960 and reached the major leagues in September 1964. A switch-hitter who threw right-handed, he was valued for his speed and glove work across the infield, playing shortstop, second base and third base through stops with the Braves, Mets and White Sox before settling in as the California Angels' everyday second baseman in 1969. Over a 15-year career he appeared in 1,481 games, batting .245 with 13 home runs, 282 RBIs and 227 stolen bases, and he earned a berth on the 1970 American League All-Star team. After his playing days he coached and managed in winter ball, the minor leagues and the majors. His sons Sandy Alomar Jr. and Roberto Alomar both went on to become major league All-Stars.
