1967 Topps #465 Willie Horton

About Willie Horton
An ankle injury limited Horton to 122 games in 1967, but he still managed 19 homers and 67 RBI, and delivered first-inning home runs in the first games of season-ending doubleheaders as Detroit fought to the last weekend of a tight four-team pennant race before falling short by a single game. That turbulent summer also saw Horton, still in uniform, address rioters in the streets near Tiger Stadium. His 1967 Topps card sits in the set's sixth print series.
Willie Horton grew up near Briggs Stadium in Detroit and signed with his hometown Tigers out of Northwestern High School in 1961. A powerfully built right-handed slugger nicknamed Willie the Wonder, he broke in with Detroit in 1963 and became a fixture in left field, making the American League All-Star team four times. His signature moment came in the 1968 World Series, when his one-hop throw from left field nailed Lou Brock at the plate in Game 5, swinging momentum toward the Tigers in their comeback title run; he also hit .304 in that Series. Horton topped 20 home runs seven times, reaching a career high of 36 in 1968, and later drew praise as one of the American League's top designated hitters. Over an eighteen-year career split mostly between Detroit and five other AL clubs, he batted .273 with 325 home runs, 1,163 RBI and 1,993 hits across 2,028 games, retiring in 1980 as one of the most popular players in Tigers history; in 2019 Detroit named a street after him and the Michigan Baseball Hall of Fame inducted him.
