About Gene Mauch
A high number from Topps' seventh series, card 606 moves Gene Mauch to Montreal, where he was the first manager in Expos history. The 1969 club, stocked in the expansion draft with Maury Wills, Mack Jones and old Phillies hands like Bobby Wine and Gary Sutherland, went 52-110 and finished last in the new National League East, 48 games behind the World Series champion Mets. It ran off a twenty-game losing streak of its own, yet Jarry Park still drew 1,212,608 fans, seventh in the league. Mauch would manage Montreal through 1975.
Gene Mauch built one of the longest managerial careers in major league history despite never playing more than 72 games in a big league season himself. Born in Salina, Kansas, and raised mostly in Los Angeles, he broke in as a light-hitting infielder with six clubs over parts of nine seasons, batting .239, before turning to managing and taking the Minneapolis Millers to the 1958 Junior World Series title. Hired to run the Philadelphia Phillies in 1960 at 34, the youngest manager in the majors, he lifted a last-place club into a contender with his signature approach: bunting, base-to-base advancement, defense and speed, a brand of play called small ball. He managed the Phillies through parts of nine seasons, then ran the expansion Montreal Expos, the Minnesota Twins and the California Angels, retiring in 1988 with 1,902 wins, eighth on the all-time list at the time. Three times his clubs came within a single victory of the World Series; none won a pennant, a distinction that shadowed an otherwise widely respected career. Montreal later placed him in the Expos Hall of Fame.
