1969 Topps #231 Pat Dobson

About Pat Dobson
Still with Detroit in 1969, Dobson again split time between starting and relieving, appearing in 49 games and going 5-10 with a 3.60 ERA and nine saves in what proved to be his final season as a Tiger before a winter trade sent him to San Diego. This card is from the third print series.
Pat Dobson was a right-handed pitcher who spent eleven seasons in the majors with Detroit, San Diego, Baltimore, Atlanta, the New York Yankees and Cleveland. He broke in with the Tigers in 1967 after years of grinding through the minors and winter ball, working mostly in relief before Detroit's 1968 championship season, in which he appeared in the World Series against St. Louis. Traded to San Diego, he became a full-time starter for the first time in 1970. A trade to Baltimore paid off immediately: in 1971 Dobson won twenty games as one of four Orioles pitchers to reach that mark, a feat matched only once before in major league history, and he made the All-Star team the following season. Later stops with the Yankees produced a nineteen-win season in 1974. He finished his career with 122 wins, 1,301 strikeouts and a 3.54 ERA over 414 games, and went on to coach pitching for several organizations after retiring as a player.
