The story on this card
Brooks opened 1970 with the Iowa Oaks in Triple-A, where he hit .286 and drew 82 walks to lead the American Association. Oakland called him up in August, sent him back after a pinch-hit strikeout, and recalled him in September. He started the last four games, got a hit in each, and ended at .333 with two home runs and five RBIs in seven games. His fourth-series card, #381, is a Rookie Stars pairing with fellow Athletics prospect Mike Olivo, the rookie card for both men. Bobby Brooks, a 5-foot-8 outfielder, hit .231 with five home runs in 55 games for the Athletics and Angels between 1969 and 1973. He led the 1969 Southern League in homers and runs, and a Harbor City ball field carries his name.
Iowa used Olivo in 25 games, including 20 starts, in 1969. He finished 5-12 with a 5.72 ERA over 140 innings for Oakland's Triple-A affiliate. His 1970 Topps rookie card, fourth-series #381, paired him with Bobby Brooks on an Athletics Rookie Stars panel. Mike Olivo, also known as Milciades Olivo, was a Dominican right-hander who pitched in the Cardinals, Athletics and Yankees systems, as well as in Mexico and for the Tigres del Licey.
