1970 Topps #446 Billy Grabarkewitz

About Billy Grabarkewitz
Grabarkewitz was hitting .420 on May 17, and he led the Dodgers that year with 17 home runs and a .399 on-base percentage. After a write-in campaign, Gil Hodges named him a National League reserve; he was at .341 at the break and singled in the 12th inning of the All-Star Game. A late slide left him at .289, with 84 RBIs and a Dodgers-record 149 strikeouts. Card #446, a fourth-series issue, is his rookie card.
Billy Grabarkewitz was a Texas-born infielder who played seven big league seasons, 1969 to 1975, for the Dodgers, Angels, Phillies, Cubs and Athletics. The Dodgers drafted him in the 12th round in 1966 out of St. Mary's University in San Antonio, and he joined the 'Mod Squad' of young Dodgers, named after the television show; the group appeared on the May 19, 1969 cover of Sports Illustrated. His one full-time year, 1970, earned him an All-Star selection and the nickname 'Billy Sunday,' after a .392 line in the first 14 Sundays. Shoulder, arm and ankle injuries then reduced him to a utility role. After the 1972 season he went with Frank Robinson to the Angels in a seven-player trade. He finished with a .236 average and 28 home runs in 466 games, and later became a life insurance agent in San Antonio and founder of the Southwest Marketing Alliance in Dallas.
