1970 Topps #693 Bob Johnson

About Bob Johnson
Of Johnson's 29 hits in 1969, split between St. Louis and Oakland, 14 came as a pinch hitter, in 50 pinch-hitting at-bats. The next year he hit .174 in 30 games for the Athletics, with one home run, and spent a short stint at Iowa of the American Association. His last major league game, on June 20, 1970, was as a pinch hitter. Topps issued him as an Oakland Athletic on #693, a high number from the seventh series.
Robert Wallace Johnson, born March 4, 1936, in Omaha, Nebraska, grew up in Edina, Minnesota, and signed with the Detroit Tigers out of high school in 1954. He spent six seasons in Detroit's minor-league chain before the Kansas City Athletics took him in the Rule 5 draft after the 1959 season. Over an 11-year major-league career from 1960 to 1970, Johnson played every infield position for seven clubs, largely as a utility man and pinch hitter. He led the American League in pinch hits in 1964 and the National League in 1967. Kansas City teammate Bill Tuttle tagged him Rocky for his resemblance to slugger Rocky Colavito. Johnson was a member of the Baltimore Orioles' 1966 World Series championship team. He finished with a .272 batting average, 44 home runs and 230 RBIs in 874 games. His stints came with the Athletics, Senators, Orioles, Mets, Reds, Braves, Cardinals and the Athletics again, by then in Oakland. After retiring he returned to Minnesota and worked in sales. He died in St. Paul in November 2019 at 83.
