About Bob Watson

Watson hit .408 at Oklahoma City in 1969, and he expected a place on the 1970 Houston roster. Then the Astros acquired left fielder Tommy Davis, a two-time batting champion, and Watson became a utility man who filled in at first base, catcher and the outfield. He played first base in 83 games and caught in 6. Overall he hit .272 with 11 home runs and 61 RBI. His 1970 Topps card is #407, from the fourth series, with Houston.

Bob Watson broke in with the Houston Astros in September 1966 and spent 14 seasons in Houston as a first baseman and outfielder, batting .297 with 139 home runs for the club. Nicknamed "Bull," he was chosen for the NL All-Star team in 1973 and 1975 and hit for the cycle against the San Francisco Giants in 1977. In 1975 he was credited with scoring what was reported at the time as the one millionth run in major league history, beating Dave Concepcion to the plate by seconds. Traded to the Boston Red Sox in 1979, he later hit for the cycle again with Boston, becoming the first player to do it in both leagues. He later played for the New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves, reaching the World Series with the Yankees in 1981, and retired after the 1984 season with a .295 career average, 184 home runs and 989 RBI over 19 years.
