About Bobby Knoop
Knoop hit .224 with 7 home runs and 47 RBI in 1969 and ranked fourth among American League second basemen in fielding percentage. He holds a share of two second-base records from 1966, six double plays in a game on May 1 and twelve putouts on August 30. His 1970 Topps card, #695, is a high number from the seventh series and pictures him with the White Sox.
Bobby Knoop, a right-handed second baseman, was born in Sioux City, Iowa, and attended Montebello High School in California. The Milwaukee Braves signed him in 1956, and he played for ten minor league teams before the Los Angeles Angels took him in the December 1963 Rule 5 draft. He became the club's regular second baseman in 1964 and held the job into 1969, turning double plays beside shortstop Jim Fregosi, his roommate and closest friend in baseball. He led AL second basemen in fielding percentage in 1966 and won three straight Gold Gloves from 1966 through 1968. He started at second base for the American League in the 1966 All-Star Game, the same year he posted career highs of 17 home runs, 72 RBIs and 54 runs. After Anaheim he played for the Chicago White Sox and Kansas City Royals, closing out a nine-year career in 1972. He finished with a .236 average and 56 home runs in 1,153 games. After retiring he worked for over 40 years as a coach, scout and adviser, and he was inducted into the Angels Hall of Fame in 2013.
