About Clyde King
Clyde King's first Giants season brought a clash with Willie Mays over a misunderstanding about whether Mays was supposed to play in a game against the Astros. According to Mays, King threatened a fine, and general manager Chub Feeney had Mays apologize; Mays wrote that the two did not talk for the rest of 1969. The 1970 club started 19-23 and trailed Cincinnati by 12 games when he was fired on May 23. Card #624, in the sixth series, is King's solo manager card for the Giants.
Clyde King was a right-handed pitcher who spent seven seasons in the majors, almost all of it with the Brooklyn Dodgers, before finishing his major league career with the Cincinnati Reds in 1953. Signed out of the University of North Carolina in 1944, he debuted with Brooklyn that June and worked mostly out of the bullpen, posting his best season in 1951 with 14 wins and 121 1/3 innings pitched. He pitched for Brooklyn's 1947 and 1952 pennant winners, going 6-5 with a 2.77 ERA in 29 games in 1947. Arm and shoulder trouble set in late in 1951, and he finished with a 32-25 record and a 4.14 ERA in 200 games. After his playing days King managed in the minor leagues, served as a big-league pitching coach, and managed the San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees. He later served the Yankees as general manager from 1984 to 1986 and as a special advisor.
