1970 Topps #483 Gail Hopkins

About Gail Hopkins
Hopkins hit .286 in 116 games for the White Sox in 1970. He played first base in 77 of them and caught in 8. A year earlier he had batted .265 with 8 home runs in 124 games. Card #483, from the fifth series, is his rookie card and shows him with Chicago. The White Sox traded him to Kansas City that October.
Gail Hopkins was a left-handed-hitting first baseman and catcher who played 514 major league games from 1968 to 1974 for the White Sox, Royals and Dodgers. A catcher at Pepperdine, he was an All-American in 1963 and became the first Pepperdine baseball player to reach the majors. He played for the Edmonton Oilers of the Western Canadian Baseball League in 1964 before signing with Chicago. He was known as a hard man to strike out, with one of the lowest strikeout-to-at-bat ratios of his time. After the majors he played in Japan from 1975 to 1977 for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp and Nankai Hawks, setting a Carp home run record with 33 in 1975 and batting .329 in 1976, when he played in the Japanese All-Star game. He then left baseball for medicine, earned an M.D. at Rush Medical College and practiced orthopedic surgery in California, Illinois and West Virginia.
