1970 Topps #378 Jim Davenport

About Jim Davenport
Davenport drove in 42 runs in 1969 with two home runs. Third base took 104 of his 112 games. After 22 games in 1970 he finished the season as a coach on manager Charlie Fox's staff, then managed the Triple-A Phoenix Giants from 1971 to 1973; his service with the Giants organization eventually totaled 51 years. Card #378, a fourth-series issue, lists him with the Giants.
James Houston Davenport won a football scholarship to Mississippi Southern College as a quarterback, hit .439 for the baseball team in 1954 and signed with the Giants after that season. He debuted on April 15, 1958, taking the franchise's first West Coast at-bat, a strikeout against Don Drysdale, and spent all 13 of his seasons in San Francisco. A sure-handed third baseman nicknamed "Peanut," a name his grandfather gave him as a child, he led National League third basemen in fielding percentage from 1959 through 1961 and played 97 consecutive errorless games from July 1966 to April 1968. His best season came in 1962: he made the All-Star team, won his only Gold Glove and helped the Giants to the National League pennant. He retired in 1970 with a .258 average, 77 home runs and 456 RBI, and his 1,130 games at third base are the most in Giants history. He managed the Giants for most of 1985 and belongs to the Mississippi and Alabama sports halls of fame.
